Unsweetened Holds 55% of Demand as Sweetened Almond Milk Gains Faster in the Philippines

The Philippines’ almond milk category is developing around two different consumer priorities: established demand for unsweetened products and faster growth in sweetened variants. Unsweetened almond milk accounted for 55% of product demand in 2026, while sweetened almond milk is projected to record a 7.8% CAGR from 2026 to 2032. The contrast highlights how the category is balancing health-oriented consumption with broader taste preferences.

A Category Expanding Beyond a Niche Consumer Base

The Philippines almond milk market was valued at USD 10.21 million in 2025 and is estimated at USD 12.39 million in 2026. It is projected to reach USD 18.22 million by 2032, representing a CAGR of 6.64% during 2026-2032. The category includes almond milk used as a direct beverage as well as in coffee, cereal, baking and other food and beverage applications.

Several structural factors are supporting this expansion. Urbanization, changing dietary preferences and greater health awareness are widening the potential consumer base for plant-based dairy alternatives. The market analysis also identifies lactose intolerance as an important demand driver, particularly because almond milk can provide a dairy-free option for consumers who experience difficulty digesting conventional milk.

The National Nutrition Council of the Philippines similarly notes that most Filipinos are genetically intolerant to lactose, although the severity and individual experience can vary. This provides an important functional context for dairy alternatives, where consumption is not necessarily tied only to vegan or lifestyle preferences.

Unsweetened Products Remain the Established Choice

Unsweetened almond milk currently occupies the leading position within the product segment, accounting for 55% of demand in 2026. Its positioning fits several everyday consumption occasions, including coffee, cereal, smoothies and cooking. Lower-sugar positioning can also appeal to consumers who are considering plant-based beverages as part of broader dietary changes.

The strength of unsweetened products also reflects the role almond milk plays as a dairy substitute rather than simply a flavored beverage. For consumers purchasing almond milk regularly, a neutral formulation can provide greater flexibility across different uses. Retail availability has also expanded through digital grocery platforms, giving consumers additional access to packaged almond milk outside traditional supermarket channels.

This established position suggests that unsweetened almond milk remains closely connected to the category’s core consumption base. However, its current share does not necessarily indicate that it will be the fastest-growing part of the market.

Sweetened Almond Milk Is Expanding at a Faster Pace

Sweetened almond milk represents the more rapidly expanding product segment, with a projected CAGR of 7.8% between 2026 and 2032. The difference between its growth rate and the overall market CAGR of 6.64% indicates that consumer demand is gradually broadening beyond strictly functional dairy replacement.

Taste familiarity is an important factor behind this shift. For consumers who are less accustomed to plant-based beverages, a sweeter profile can make almond milk more approachable as a direct-drinking product. It can also support breakfast and beverage occasions where taste plays a stronger role in purchase decisions.

The development of flavored products reinforces this broader positioning. The market analysis identifies vanilla and matcha variants alongside original and unsweetened products in Philippine retail channels. Such extensions allow brands to target additional consumption occasions while maintaining almond milk’s plant-based positioning.

The result is a category in which the leading segment and the fastest-growing segment serve somewhat different priorities. Unsweetened products remain associated with everyday substitution and health-conscious consumption, while sweetened products have greater potential to expand the category among consumers who place greater emphasis on flavor.

Affordability Remains a Major Constraint

Despite the category’s expansion, price remains a significant barrier. The Philippines almond milk supply is heavily dependent on imported products or imported almond raw materials, creating exposure to freight, currency and distribution costs. The market analysis places observed almond milk pricing at roughly USD 1.92 to USD 4.55 per litre-equivalent pack.

This premium positioning limits almond milk’s accessibility compared with conventional dairy and lower-priced plant-based alternatives. It also means that category expansion is closely connected to the purchasing capacity of urban and higher-income consumers.

Affordability therefore represents an important consideration for companies seeking to broaden consumption. Expanding flavors can make products more appealing, but the ability to reach a wider consumer base ultimately depends partly on whether products can become more accessible without undermining their nutritional and functional positioning.

Nutrition Could Become an Important Differentiator

Another opportunity identified in the market is the development of nutritionally fortified almond milk at more accessible price points. The analysis notes that almond milk can contain substantially less protein than dairy milk unless products are specifically formulated or fortified to address the nutritional gap.

This issue is particularly relevant when almond milk is purchased as a functional dairy substitute. Consumers who avoid conventional dairy because of lactose intolerance may place greater importance on nutritional equivalence than consumers who purchase plant-based beverages primarily for lifestyle reasons.

The opportunity therefore extends beyond adding new flavors. Products that combine affordability with improved nutritional profiles could address two of the category’s central constraints at the same time: price sensitivity and the nutritional differences between plant-based and dairy beverages.

Conventional Products Still Dominate, While Organic Gains Momentum

The nature segment provides another example of this two-speed development. Conventional almond milk accounted for 91% of the market in 2026, supported by its comparatively accessible pricing and broader availability. Organic almond milk, however, is identified as the fastest-growing nature segment, with a projected CAGR of 13.38% between 2026 and 2032.

The contrast reflects different consumer priorities. Conventional products are better positioned for wider adoption because affordability remains important, while organic products can appeal to higher-income consumers who place greater emphasis on ingredient sourcing and certification.

This dynamic suggests that market development will not follow a single consumer profile. Instead, the category is likely to continue separating into value-oriented mainstream products and premium offerings designed around specific nutritional, ingredient or taste preferences.

Technology and Local Food Innovation Add Another Dimension

Local food innovation could also influence the longer-term development of plant-based beverages. The Philippine Department of Science and Technology’s food innovation programs identify plant-based foods and alternative dairy products among areas for processing technology development. The agency has also highlighted the need to reduce dependence on imported raw materials and improve local food-processing capabilities.

DOST-PCIEERD has additionally launched Project ARTIC, a food-industry initiative involving artificial intelligence, computer vision and robotics for food production, processing and distribution. Although the project is not specific to almond milk, these capabilities illustrate the broader technological direction of Philippine food manufacturing.

For almond milk, improvements in local processing, supply-chain management and demand forecasting could become relevant because import dependence contributes to the category’s cost structure.

The Market Is Moving Toward More Diverse Consumption

The Philippines almond milk market is therefore developing along several parallel paths. Unsweetened products retain the largest share, reflecting established demand for flexible, everyday dairy alternatives. Sweetened products are expanding faster as taste becomes a stronger tool for attracting new consumers. Conventional formulations remain dominant because affordability matters, while organic products are gaining momentum from a smaller base.

The central question for the category is increasingly how these different priorities can coexist. Continued expansion will depend not only on consumer awareness, but also on product affordability, nutritional value, availability and the ability of suppliers to address different consumption occasions.

As the market moves toward 2032, the coexistence of a dominant unsweetened segment and a faster-growing sweetened segment provides a useful indication of how plant-based beverage demand is evolving in the Philippines: from a relatively narrow dairy-alternative proposition toward a broader category shaped by health, taste, convenience and price.
