Umrah is a sacred obligation to perform once in your lifetime, and women are no exception. In ancient times, women may not have been allowed to perform the obligation on their own, but recently they have been allowed to travel for the Umrah alone if they meet certain specifications. There is a moment that women often describe in the same way.

She steps into the Kaaba, looks at the holy Kaaba draped in black velvet, surrounded by thousands of pilgrims moving in the same direction as they are one single body and soul, calling the same Lord. For those arranging Meeqat travel UK, this sacred moment can be the beginning of a deeply meaningful journey, and then something inside them stops.

The following guide has everything you need to get there, practically, physically and spiritually prepared and confident. So, let’s do it together!

Understanding the Umrah rules for women

Before diving into the packing details, physical preparation or spiritual readiness, let’s understand what Islam says about women performing Umrah, clearly and without any confusion. If you are planning ahead, Ramadan Umrah packages 2027 may also be considered as part of your preparation.

Let’s dig into the spiritual foundation!

The question arises: Can women travel alone to perform Umrah? When planning the journey, practical details such as the Umrah visa cost from UK can also be considered. According to the latest Saudi regulations and many Islamic scholars, yes, women can perform Umrah alone now. But they need to meet some specific conditions, such as the traditional views and the scholarly instructions. This shift in regulations has made the pilgrimage more accessible.

The question arises: Can women travel alone to perform Umrah?  According to the latest Saudi regulations and many Islamic scholars, yes, women can perform Umrah alone now. But they need to meet some specific conditions, such as the traditional views and the scholarly instructions. This shift in regulations has made the pilgrimage more accessible. Traditionally, Women pilgrims under 45 are not allowed to travel for Umrah; hence, proof of relationship from a male guardian must also be attached to the Umrah application.

However, in 2021, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia updated its Umrah regulations to permit women aged 45 or above to travel with an organised Umrah 2027 package from the UK or authentic trip providers without a Mahram. For women under 45, the Mahram proof requirement remains.

Scholars universally agree that Umrah isn’t obligatory for women in the same way it is obligatory for men. It becomes obligatory only when all the conditions are met, such as Mahram, travel preparation, and safety. For women, who can go, the reward is equal to that of her male counterpart. Allah does not distinguish.

Ihram Rules for Women

Unlike men, women do not have to follow the same Ihram rules. The Ihram for a woman is:

  • Her regular modest dress
  • No face or hand covering
  • Can wear any colour; no white colour specification
  • Covering their face and hands is strictly prohibited during Ihram.

Honestly, this is the peak beauty of Islam that it does not bind women even while their obligation. But this is also the reason most women do not understand the Ihram rules well.

Umrah steps explained

Entering Ihram at the Miqat

The Miqat is the designated boundary from where your Umrah begins. No pilgrim, regardless of women or men may pass without the state of Ihram. For UK pilgrims coming from Jeddah or Madinah Airport, the Miqat is passed during their flight. The cabin crew usually announce it and stay prepared in advance. Perform Ghusal before boarding and make your Niyyah for Umrah with the following:

“Labbayk Allahumma Umrah”

Then begin Talbiyah saying:

Labbayk Allahumma labbayk, labbayka la sharika laka labbayk, innal hamda wan ni’mata laka wal mulk, la sharika lak.

Women are advised to recite Talbiyah quietly and continue reciting it till you reach your first Ritual.

Perform Tawaf

Tawaf is the second ritual of Umrah following Ihram. The ritual includes circling seven times around the Kaaba, starting and ending at the Black Stone/ Hajar Aswad. It is highly encouraged to walk with calmness, humility, grace, reflection and compassion.

The Kaaba was originally believed to have been first established by Hazrat Adam A.S and later rebuilt by the Prophet Ibrahim. The ritual track back to the ancient legacy of Hazrat Ibrahim AS when along with his son rebuilt the Kaaba as the first house of Allah and made a Tawaf around the House as an act of thankfulness and dedication. The act of service symbolizes unity, devotion, and humility, making it the central ritual of Umrah.

Allah commands Ismail, Surah al-Baqrah 2:125:

And We charged Ibrahim and Ismail: Purify My House for those who perform Tawaf and those who are staying there and those who bow and prostrate in prayer.”

Between each circle, recite simple duas. Women are not required to touch or kiss the Black Stone if it involves a dangerous crush of pilgrims. In such a situation, a gesture from a distance, raising your right hand towards it is valid and accepted. Be mindful of  you are circling the House of Allah, and your every step is recorded. After completing the seven rounds, head to Maqam Ibrahim and pray two Nawafil of Gratitude if possible. But if the area is crowded, you can perform them anywhere in the Haram.

The walking between Safa and Marwa, Sa’i

Sa’i commemorates the action of Hazrat Hajar A.S, and it involves seven circles between the Hills of Safa and Marwa at a normal pace. Begin your ritual from Safa, recite simple dua, and walk towards Marwa. That is one. Return to Safa, and that is two. Complete seven circles, each ending at Marwa.

While you perform the ritual, reflect on Hazrat Hajar AS. She was alone; no companion was in sight, barely moving infant in her arms, without a map and without any guarantee — only Tawakul in her hand and faith in Allah. She moved anyway and thence called for a miracle that is still flowing after more than four thousand years. Sa’i isn’t just a ritual. It is an example of unshakeable trust and unwavering faith in Divine wisdom. It is proof that Allah never leaves your side even during moments of uncertainty.

Halq/ Taqseer

Halq/ Taqseer is the last ritual of Umrah. After completing Sa’i, men head to shave their heads and females are required to cut a fingertip length of their hair, marking the completion of the ritual. Shaving is only for men, women are to cut a certain amount of your hair from the ends of their hair. This act marks the completion of your Umrah. The Ihram regulations are lifted and you can return to your normal life. Umrah is not ended here; its messages and blessings must continue after returning home.

Travel Tips

  • While booking your Umrah packages, check for the authenticity of the travel agency, as there are more fraudulent companies than real ones.
  • Check if the Agency is ATOL-protected, IATA-certified, a MOFA affiliate, and is recognised by the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah.
  • Ensure your Umrah booking goes through a legally approved system
  • Check for transparency
  • While travelling without a Mahram, check for your rooming arrangements if they are close to the Haram, as walking between the hotel and Haram is physically demanding.
  • Manage and check if your Umrah services such as Visa, accommodation, transport and other amenities are well managed beforehand.

Conclusion

Umrah for women is no lesser pilgrimage than a man’s journey. It is the same journey to the same house of the Almighty, with the same reward waiting on the other side. Prepare well. Know your rights and pack with pure and heartfelt intentions.

The Prophetﷺ put a great value on the pilgrimage of women and honoured their presence in the sacred places as an act of worship equal in every meaningful way to that of men. And when you stand in front of the Kaaba for the first time, your heart feels it. The moment was always yours.

May the Almighty accept our Umrah, grant ease in every step, and make the journey truly transformative. Ameen!
